Gyro King (Brooklyn)

Positive Fresh lamb gyro and chicken marinated with tikka masala giving it a better zing than the bland chicken of the NYC gyro carts.

Negative:  Although very similar to the NYC gyro carts it still does not give you the same experience.  The white sauce is different as well.

Overall: Great alternative to the NYC gyro carts if you want a slightly different taste and do not want to travel into the city.

Revisit:  Only if I am in the area and don’t want to go in the city

Want some gyro platters but don’t want to go to nyc?

Gyro King is located in Coney Island, Brooklyn, a busy area predominately inhabited by the Pakistani Muslim community. It is located in between a halal fried chicken place and barber shop . It is a small, clean food place where you can order only and sit on a bench to wait. That is fine though as it is similar to the gyro carts seen across New York City.  There is actually a gyro cart located right across the street from this place as well.  The cooks/workers there were nice and friendly.  They do have a bathroom in the back that you can request to use.

The food tastes very similar to the gyro carts in New York City with some differences.  The lamb does not have the usual lamb taste and therefore tastes fresh as well.  The chicken is seasoned in tikka masala which actually gives it a better taste than the bland chicken found on the gyro carts and is actually cooked completely.  The rice is a higher quality basmati rice.  If you do their mixed platter you would get the taste of New York with some modifications that, i think, make it a little tastier and a newer experience if you are tired of the carts.

I would come back here if in the mood for gyro platters and am passing by the area.  It is actually pretty hard to find this taste outside of New York City.  But they did it, albeit, still being pretty close to the city.  Now if they move to Philly, NJ, or CT, then I think those in the areas would be very thankful to be able to experience a taste from New York close to home. Despite all this, I still love the carts in Manhattan because the white sauce at Gyro King was not comparable and although it tasted more fresh and seemed to have higher quality, I still missed the platters from the cart.

Di Fara Pizza (Brooklyn)

PositiveThe BEST PIZZA I HAVE EVER EATEN.

Negative: Small, hole in the wall place without adequate seating and VERY SLOW service

Overall: If you want to eat Excellent Pizza but don’t mind the wait or standing then this is the place to try.

——————————————————-

Are you a pizza junkie? Are you willing to go from place to place to find the best pizza in New York?

If yes then you’ll have to go to Brooklyn to try out Di Fara’s. You have to make sure that you get there atleast a hour before you plan on eating because all the details of making pizza are done right in front of you from scratch by Dom DeMarco himself. (and if you only want just a slice then just pray he has time to make an extra pie between all his other orders) The pizza is made with a special sauce which is absolutely delicious and very different from any other pizza sauce I have eaten. Another unique aspect of the way this pizza is made is that Dom puts freshly grated Romano cheese on it right after taking it out of the oven. He also adds olive oil and fresh cut Basil which he allows to sit and absorb before giving you it to eat. Besides the aroma of the pizza, just as i put the pizza slice in my mouth I knew that it would be one of the best pizza Ive ever eaten.

The taste of the sauce and the cheese combination with olive oil and basil was just perfect. I know that I would be back here every time I am in Brooklyn looking for great NY style pizza . You can tell from his various acolades at the store that he really is very highly rated in the New York. It is a bit on the pricy side; who really wants to give five dollars for slice of pizza when you can get one alot cheaper. Bit I think it’s definitely worth it. You can not compare every day pizza to this fresh and good tasting pizza. The place is definitely cramped for how popular this place is.  However its just like any typical pizza joint with some seating. Overall its definitely worth trying if you are a Pizza fan!

Positive: Authentic Belgian Liege Waffles with a wide variety of tasty toppings at a great price.

Negative: Must check their website before going as they move to different locations throughout the day.  The environment can change depending on the crowd, location, and how easy it is for you to eat standing up.

Overall: Scrumptious and authentic Belgian waffles from a street vendor that you must try.

Looking for dessert on the go?  try the waffle truck

Please note:  This is a waffle truck so please check the website (listed below) to see where the truck is located on the day and time you are planning on going.

Bottom line….After eating these waffles I cannot eat a waffle anywhere else.  In fact I actually have a greater appreciation for waffles now, and can probably eat at this truck any time of the day.  The delicious waffles offered by the truck have high quality taste whereas most waffles I’ve eaten taste like cardboard which I swallow using lots of maple syrup.  Now I finally know what good Belgian waffles are really supposed to taste like.

I have only eaten the Liege waffle as the other waffles contain some type of animal fat in them. The dinges (toppings) that I recommend are the Belgian chocolate fudge, walnuts, and the spekuloos spread (their own special spread which looks like peanut butter but tastes like traditional Belgian gingerbread-cinnamon cookies). This combination tastes just too good.  There are other dinges that they offer too, like fruits, nutella, maple syrup, etc. and you can get it with ice cream as well.

If you’ve already eaten dinner before this, I recommend splitting it with another person because it can be quite filling.  Since it is a truck the environment is so-so depending on where you are, how crowded it is, and how carefully you eat while standing up.  Overall its a great place to visit and try when you are in the area.
